Starting a journaling habit can feel a bit intimidating, especially if you’re not used to expressing your thoughts on paper.

Journaling is a powerful tool for self-discovery, emotional growth, and even just making sense of the world around you. It doesn’t have to be perfect or polished—it’s a space for you to explore your thoughts, reflect on your experiences, and dream about your future.

You might be interested in keeping a journal, but not knowing what to write is keeping you from actually starting! That’s why I put together this list of prompts, so you have somewhere to start.

The prompts below focus on themes like courage, emotional introspection, relationships, and personal growth. No matter where you’re at in life, writing down your thoughts can be a step toward better understanding yourself and creating positive change.

Bravery & Courage

  1. Describe a time you were scared but pushed through anyway. What did you learn from that experience?
  2. What does being brave mean to you? How can you show more bravery in your everyday life?
  3. Write about a risk you’ve taken. How did it turn out, and how did it shape who you are today?
  4. What’s one fear you’d like to overcome? What steps can you take to face it?
  5. Think about someone you admire for their courage. What qualities do they possess that inspire you?

Emotional Introspection

  1. How do you currently feel, and what do you think is causing those emotions?
  2. What are three things that stress you out? How could you manage that stress more effectively?
  3. Write about a time when you felt deeply happy. What were the circumstances, and how can you create more moments like that?
  4. What emotions are the hardest for you to express? Why do you think that is?
  5. What is something you’re proud of but have never told anyone about?

Memories & Reflection

  1. Write about your earliest memory. What emotions are tied to it?
  2. Reflect on a friendship or relationship that has changed. How does it make you feel now?
  3. What’s a childhood dream that you’ve either fulfilled or let go of? How do you feel about that dream today?
  4. What was the last big change in your life? How did you cope, and what did you learn from it?
  5. Think about a mistake you’ve made. What did you learn from it, and how has it shaped who you are now?

Travel & Exploration

  1. What’s a place you’ve always wanted to visit? Why does it call to you?
  2. Write about a trip you’ve taken. How did it change the way you see the world?
  3. How does travel (or the idea of travel) make you feel? Why do you think it has that effect on you?
  4. What’s one lesson you’ve learned from a culture or place you’ve visited?
  5. If you could live anywhere for a year, where would it be, and why?

Hopes for the Future

  1. Imagine your life 5 years from now. Where are you, and what are you doing?
  2. What are three goals you want to achieve in the next year? How can you get started?
  3. Write a letter to your future self. What advice or encouragement would you give them?
  4. What’s something you’re looking forward to? How can you prepare for it?
  5. Think about one habit you’d like to develop. Why is it important, and how can you start today?

Relationships & Connections

  1. Who is someone that has had a big impact on your life? How did they influence you?
  2. Write about a difficult conversation you’ve had. How did it go, and what would you do differently now?
  3. Who do you feel most comfortable being yourself around? Why?
  4. What do you appreciate most about your close friends or family? How can you show them more gratitude?
  5. Think about someone you’ve lost touch with. How do you feel about reconnecting with them?

Self-Discovery & Growth

  1. What’s something new you’ve learned about yourself recently?
  2. When was the last time you stepped out of your comfort zone? How did it make you feel?
  3. Write about a personal strength you have. How has it helped you in life?
  4. What’s something you’ve always wanted to try but haven’t? What’s holding you back?
